FAIR Health Provides Data to Support the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine’s Forum on Temporomandibular Disorders

October 17, 2024

Upon request, FAIR Health is providing data regarding the prevalence of diagnoses for temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) among the commercially insured population in the United States to the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine’s Forum on Temporomandibular Disorders. The data, together with data from Medicare and Medicaid, will contribute to a study on the prevalence and treatment of TMDs in the United States.

TMDs are disorders of the jaw muscles. These conditions have a complex etiology that can cause temporary discomfort or lead to chronic, debilitating facial pain. However, data on incidence, prevalence and treatment uptake are lacking. The collaboration with FAIR Health is part of a larger effort to improve research and care for people living with TMDs. FAIR Health’s involvement includes membership in a working group to help develop a comprehensive, reliable estimate of TMD incidence and prevalence. Data from the FH NPIC® database will be used to generate prevalence rates of TMD diagnoses among the commercially insured population. These commercial rates, paired with rates of TMD among the publicly insured population drawn from Medicare and Medicaid data, will help to provide a fuller picture of TMD prevalence in each population.

A report with the Forum’s findings is expected to be published once all data are collated and analyzed.

This project represents one of the many ways in which FAIR Health’s data repository can be used to create custom datasets. Find out more about FH® Custom Analytics here.

FAIR Health President Robin Gelburd stated: “We are excited to assist this important collaboration and help shed light on TMD incidence and prevalence.”
